Check delivery details before you submit
An address is the one part of an order that cannot be corrected after dispatch. Reading it back, field by field, takes twenty seconds and prevents the most expensive kind of small mistake.
The seven fields
- Recipient name, as it appears on the label or with the building's reception.
- Street line, including flat, unit or building number.
- Second address line, only where the seller offers one.
- City or town.
- Region or county, if the form asks for it.
- Postcode, in the exact format the seller expects.
- Contact number, in case the carrier needs to reach you on the day.
Every one of these should be copied from a source you control — a saved note, a bill, or the seller's own saved address book — rather than retyped from memory on a phone.
A fictitious example
The address below is invented for this example. It is not a real address and must not be used for a real order.
| Field | Example value | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient | A. Example | Matches the name on the buzzer |
| Street | Flat 4, 22 Sample Street | Flat number before street |
| City | Exampletown | No abbreviations |
| Region | Examplefordshire | Only if the form requires it |
| Postcode | EX1 2AB | Single space, block capitals |
| Phone | 07000 000000 | Number you will actually answer |
UK specifics worth knowing
Postcodes carry more information than most shoppers realise: the outward code narrows the area, the inward code narrows the street or delivery point. A transposed digit can place a parcel in a different town, and carriers do not routinely phone to check. Copy the postcode character by character and read it back in reverse.
Region is optional in many forms and required in a few. Where a dropdown restricts the choice, select the correct area rather than the first entry that looks similar. For a building with a concierge or a shared entrance, add the detail the courier needs — this is exactly the kind of note that saves a failed delivery attempt. Any address requirement imposed by the destination country should be checked against the seller's or carrier's current instructions, not assumed from a previous order.
The final read-back
Before you press submit, do three things: compare the checkout address with the address in your sheet, confirm the delivery option you selected matches the estimate you budgeted for, and check that the contact number is current. Then, after ordering, paste the confirmation into your timeline in tracking orders and parcels.
If the parcel contains restricted goods, confirm the address is one the carrier will serve for that category — see checking transport restrictions. Then update the order row and total on the hipobuy spreadsheet home page.
