Season and daily use

Plan everyday combinations

Most shoppers do not need more clothes; they need more combinations. A list that names five real activities and the pieces that serve them will beat a list of twenty separate wants every time.

Name the activities

Start with a normal week, not with a mood board. For most people it contains a commute, at least one long walk or a school run, a desk day, and a weekend that mixes errands with something social. Write those four or five situations down, with the footwear and outer layer each one genuinely needs.

Weather decides which of them dominate. A 25-minute walk to a station in November is a different requirement from a five-minute walk to a car, so record the walking time and the exposure in the row rather than leaving it implicit.

Four situations, one new purchase. The trainers and the shoulder bag are doing most of the work, which is exactly what a combination table should reveal.

Three filters

Purpose. Does the piece serve at least two of the situations you wrote down? Comfort. Can you walk the stated distance in it, in the weather stated? Pairing count. How many existing items does it go with — a number, not a feeling.

Give every candidate a pairing count. Anything that pairs with fewer than three things you already own is a cost with a narrow return, however good it looks.

Prune before you buy

Remove the row that duplicates a function you already own, then remove the row that only works for one event. What is left is usually two items, and that is the budget. Confirm sizes with recorded measurements, check the layers against the seasonal list, and keep the delivery side honest with a split budget. Then price it on the hipobuy spreadsheet home page.
